Mud Island Residents Weigh In On Bass Pro Controversy

MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Not in my backyard! One Memphis City Council member says residents on Mud Island are weary about Bass Pro's signage plans for the Pyramid.

Councilman Lee Harris says is particularly worried about plans to put a 90 x 66 foot sign on the north side of the Pyramid facing Mud Island.

"You really don't have a lot of traffic coming from that north side," Harris said.

Bass Pro's sign plans have generated plenty of controversy. Last week, several turned out at a Design Review Board meeting to object the signs.

"On the north side of the building, the only thing you can see is Mud Island traffic and barge traffic," Harris said.

"Everybody on Mud Island is fully aware there, and the barge traffic, you know, the barge, the people who drive those barges they can't stop and go in and buy a fishing rod," he added.

Harris recently sent Bass Pro a letter urging them to reconsider.

A Design Review Board meeting set for next week has been canceled as Bass Pro re-evaluates its plans.
