WEST MEMPHIS, AR - New information on the deadly shooting of two West Memphis police officers. Police have identified the suspected shooters as Jerry Kane and his 16-year-old son Joe. The father and son were part of what is considered the patriot movement.
People who know Jerry Kane say he is anything but a cold blooded killer and they can't believe what has happened.
On Jerry Kane's website, friends and supporters left messages. They don't understand how the two ended up dead in West Memphis, suspected of killing two officers.
Jacqueline is a friend of the Kane’s. She wouldn’t reveal her last name but said “I am devastated over all of it. I am devastated over the officers being dead because they are victims. I am devastated over Joe and Jerry dead because they are victims.”
Jerry Kane and his son Joe were heading back to their home in Florida after a two day seminar in Las Vegas. Jacqueline adds “They were just good people, that’s all I can say.”
But video clips show another side of Kane and his distaste for the federal government.
On the video Kane says “What we’re after here is not fighting, it's conquering. I don’t want to have to kill anybody, but if they keep messing with me that’s what it is going to come down to. And if I have to kill one I am not going to be able to stop.”
Kane was pulled over last month in New Mexico for not having a driver’s license. During a radio interview after the traffic stop he said “They are sick in the head. We just have to play their silly ass little games and kill the monster under the bed so to speak.”
Jacqueline says Jerry Kane isn't anti-government. She says he's a patriot who believes in citizens' rights.
She says “he respected everyone, no matter who they are. That’s what he taught.”
As for his son, Jacqueline says, “I am deeply grieved over little Joe. He is a 16-year-old fair-minded, god-loving little guy.”
