MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A new plan for the future of Beale Street includes promoting the history of the community and possibly introducing more early blues music.
Beale Street is an entertainment district dominated by bars and restaurants featuring mostly live entertainment.
According to the Memphis Daily News, the 52-page report announced by Mayor A C Wharton Jr. proposes a special nonprofit to replace the Beale Street Development Corp., which is involved in a long-running legal dispute with the city.
The nonprofit would be responsible for telling the history of Beale Street.
The report also notes strong differences of opinion on what music visitors to the street should hear.
Wharton hopes to have a formal reaction to the report from the Memphis City Council this summer.
