MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Starting in 2012 voters in Tennessee will notice something a bit different. You'll have to show your photo ID to cast your ballot and the state is sending out plenty of early notice.
It was slow going at most polling locations around Memphis.
“Not very busy, pretty uneventful, I am disappointed,” said voter Kim Weiss.
Weiss wasn't the only one. Early numbers indicate only about 16-percent of registered voters came out.
“There may be a little apathy with government,” voter Denise Johnson told abc24.com.
But those who didn't show this election could run into problems next year if they're not informed. Starting in 2012, Tennessee voters are required to show photo ID. Those who spoke with abc24.com thought it was a good idea.
“I don't see a problem with that, I mean most people have an ID anyway,” said Richard Berry.
“You know we've had problems in Memphis with dead people voting. I think its right that you have to have valid state issued identification to vote,” Weiss told abc24.com.
Acceptable forms of ID include: a current or expired driver's license, state or federal-issued worker card, current or expired U.S. military identification, veterans administration card, U.S. passport, even a state handgun carry permit with a photo.
The one exception: student ID cards issued by state colleges or universities are not acceptable.
Voters out this election season told abc24.com there's no excuse.
“The fact that they're giving people information early will give them the opportunity to get that done,” said Johnson.
If you don't have a photo ID you can get one for free from a driver service center.
