Newport Judge Orders Child's Name Changed From "Messiah"

A controversial decision by a Middle Tennessee judge has a lot of people talking.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - A controversial decision by a Middle Tennessee judge has a lot of people talking.

The judge is ordering a mother to change her son's name from "Messiah."

“Everybody believes what they want so I think I should be able to name my child what I want to name him,” Messiah’s mother Jaleesa Martin said.

Jaleesa Martin's son is seven months old.

He's teething and ready to crawl, but still has a name that is up for debate.

His birth certificate reads, "Messiah Deshawn Martin."

Jaleesa and the father couldn't agree on a last name, so they wound up at a child support hearing in Newport, TN.

But when the judge heard his first name, she ordered it changed.

The order states the baby's name is now "Martin Mccullough,” which includes both parents' last names, but leaves out "Messiah."
