MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The Memphis Police Department has released the name of the officer who fatally shot a suspect on July 1.

Police were responding to a 911 hang-up call on the 5000-block of Parkside Avenue around 6 p.m. on Monday, July 1. While en route, they were told an armed suspect was shooting inside the home, and had gotten involved in a fight with a neighbor.

When officers arrived on the scene, 33-year-old Johnny Taylor was hiding behind a car in the driveway with a gun. Police ordered him to drop his weapon, but instead Taylor stood up and began firing at the officers. That's when Officer Zachary Apel, 27, fired back with a shotgun, killing Taylor.

No police officers were injured.

Officer Apel has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
