Officials Warn Against Trying To Stop Shoplifters Yourself

We've all seen videos of wanted thieves who sneak away with merchandise even under the noses of security cameras.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - We've all seen videos of wanted thieves who sneak away with merchandise even under the noses of security cameras.

"Most of the retail outlets these days, they have security guards or folks in that position," Chip Washington with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department said.

Here's why you need to be concerned. Results from a 2013 survey conducted by the national retail federation show eight in ten retailers agree that organized retail crime activity has increased in the past three years.

And retailers have seen an increase in violence when thieves try to get away.

So what do you do when you think you've spotted a shoplifter?

“No citizen should walk up to another citizen and try to apprehend them if they think they see a crime happening. That way everyone is safe," Washington said.

Bottom line, according to Washington, don't put yourself in harms way in trying to "do the right thing".

“There are many ways to do it, and I guess it all depends on where you are locationally speaking. If you're in a large store, it's not going to be that hard. You can walk around to a certain area, tell a cashier...tell the theft prevention folks," Washington said.
