MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis Light Gas and Water is teaming up with the Neighborhood Christian Center for the "Play It Cool" program. For the sixth year in a row, the two organizations have been making it possible for low-income senior Shelby County residents to get a free air conditioning unit.

MLGW donated 230 window air conditioning units to the NCC. The Neighborhood Christian Center will be accepting applications and screening eligible households on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Glen Thomas with Memphis Light Gas and Water says, "During the summer, as the heat really rises, it can be a life and death situation for someone who does not have air conditioning in their home. So, we're hoping to give some relief to those customers."

Applicants must live in Shelby County without a working A/C unit and they must be a low income senior 60 years of age or older. You must bring a Tennessee State ID or driver's license, a recent pay stub, and any physical disability information.

Installations of the units will be performed by MLGW employees in June. Applicants should contact the Neighborhood Christian Center, not MLGW, at 901-881-6013 for more information.

SteveTapp, I agree. MLGW should be doing whatever it can do to save money, not give it away. Anyone paying property taxes in this city is already in the welfare business. Our taxes keep being raised to pay for the do-nothing majority who contribute little or nothing to the tax base.

MLG&W should not be in the welfare business.
