Police Have Suspect In Custody After Missing Gosnell Girl Found Dead

17-year-old Christopher Sowell is in custody, suspected of killing an 11-year-old Arkansas girl.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - 17-year-old Christopher Sowell is in custody, suspected of killing an 11-year-old Arkansas girl.

The body of 11-year-old Jessica Williams was found in a ditch yesterday morning near Gosnell, Arkansas.

Gosnell is about 70 miles north of Memphis.

Jessica's father says his daughter wanted to know if she could go to a friend's house with her new puppy. The next thing he knew, she was gone and never made it to that friend's home.

Jessica's body was found about 5-miles from her home.

Jessica's young cousin is trying to cope with the loss.

“She was more than just a cousin. She was like my best friend in the whole world. I don't know why they had to take her like that,” cousin Kaitlin Southern said.

Sowell has been charged with First Degree Murder.

In a statement to police, Sowell stated that upon Jessica's arrival he became angry at her. He said that he pushed her off the bridge onto the ground. Sowell then stated that after Jessica got back up onto the bridge that she said she was going to tell her father about the incident. Sowell then stated that he became more angry and scared, grabbing Jessica by her throat and choking her until he observed her to get "wide-eyed." He then pushed her over the side of the bridge into the water and walked away.
