MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A man is fighting for his life at The MED after he was shot while at work at a north Memphis grocery store.
The shooting happened at Breedlove Grocery near the intersection of Breedlove and Vollintine.
The owner of Breedlove Grocery says Friday's shooting is the result of an altercation that happened Thursday night.
"They said they'd be back," said Omar Samter, the grocery store's owner.
Samter says a young man from the north Memphis neighborhood showed up the night before and started kicking the door.
The man left after police were called, but before he did, "He said he's gonna get his gun then come back and shoot us," Samter said.
That man came back to the store and made good on his promise.
A man who had just left the store said he was doing yard work when he heard 7 or 8 shots.
At least one of the shots hit a grocery employee who, according to Samter, showed up at the store after the night's troubles and stayed until morning to make sure everything was ok.
"He works two jobs, 7 days a week," Samter said, "It makes me upset, make me upset."
Samter, an Ethiopian native, bought the Breedlove Grocery in 2003 and like his employee, has never missed a day of work.
"I got six kids to raise in this store… I work hard 7 days a week, no day off. I have to work, I have to work."
Not only is Samter working hard for his family, he's working hard for something else too.
"I want to be a citizen like everybody else," he said. "I want to get better, I want American Dream."
The victim was transported to The MED in critical condition. So far there are no suspects in custody.
