Police Warn Against "Sliders" At Gas Stations

A warning before you head to the gas station.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - A warning before you head to the gas station.

A sneaky crook could be waiting for you, ready to steal your stuff while you're filling your tank.

Police call them “sliders.”

The thieves cagily slide below the top of your door, lying in wait for the right moment to pounce.

Then they reach through your window or open the door, grab your stuff, and take off with your valuables.

The crooks have been caught on camera at gas stations across the country.

Some are caught red handed.

But many victims have no idea until it's too late.

“They're not looking for a confrontation, they just want the property because they know it's being left abandoned and you're not paying enough attention,” an officer said.

Police say the best way to protect yourself is to lock your car while you're filling up.

And if you go into the station, be sure to take your purse or any valuables with you.
