Preschool Children Learning Spanish at a Fast Rate

Learning a foreign language can be difficult, but not for a group of preschool children.
CORDOVA, TN (abc24.com) - Learning a foreign language can be difficult, but not for a group of preschool children. M.E.M Christian Preschool in Cordova started teaching Spanish to their students about a year ago. It's the only preschool in the area that has an extensive Spanish curriculum.

Children ages 3 to 5 attend the preschool and learn quickly in Spanish through singing songs. The preschool has an interactive Spanish program called "Little Estrellas" or “Little Stars.” A former Ridgeway and Kirby High School teacher, Norma Brown, started the program.

“Foreign language just opens up a whole world of opportunities for our children, specifically Spanish, because here in Memphis we have about 52,000 Hispanics or Latinos and that's a whole lot and the population is increasing,” said Brown.

Each class has about 10 students. The program has become so popular there are more than 120 students enrolled. The kids learn numbers, shapes, colors, and simple phrases in Spanish.

“Children who learn a second language boost their ACT scores later,” said Brown. “It's been proven that foreign language increases standardized test scores and their ability to read, because as they grasp a second language they are more able to grasp their own language.”

I had to hear the results for myself. I asked a question in Spanish, “How do you say your numbers in Spanish, one through 10?” The students answered correctly. Remember, they're only 3 and 4 years old and they know their numbers in Spanish very well. They even sang us a "goodbye" song in Spanish.
