MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - It's an opportunity to help the less fortunate on the day of love. The Community Alliance for the Homeless is looking for volunteers to staff a Valentine's Day event that's aimed at helping the homeless.

Hundreds of volunteers will convene at the cook convention center to show some love to thousands of homeless Mid-Southerners.

Reginald Merriweather was homeless for 17 years. "It soothes my heart to know that someone out here cares about us homeless," he said. "It's hard out here on the streets. It's like no one cares about you."

Merriweather says he was overcome with emotion when he heard about the Project Homeless Connect event that's scheduled for February 14th.

Katie Kitchen is the Executive Director for the Community Alliance for the Homeless, and one of the organizers. "There's a huge range of services. People will have access to everything from a haircut, job application, medical care - we have a great partnership with Southern College of Optometry, they're going to provide vision screenings."

The one day event is designed to not only give the homeless much needed services but to also get them into a house.

"Last year we had 1,200 homeless people come and 120 were approved for permanent housing that day," Kitchen said. "The guests tell us that even if they didn't leave with keys to a new apartment, just to have somebody to listen to them and help them with a plan to return to housing is really important."

Kitchen is looking for 1,000 volunteers. Kelcey Johnson is volunteering. He says events like this are important to him. "Each person has a story and no story is the same," he said.

Anyone wishing to volunteer must be 18 years of age. If you're interested in volunteering, visit www.communityallianceforthehomeless.com
