MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - If at first you don't succeed, the folks running Beale Street Landing say try, try again.

This time, it is try to get a restaurant inside the building.

They only had one person apply for running a restaurant last year. That person later pulled out because of differences between his group and the Riverfront Development Corporation.

“Our desire is a family owned Memphis restaurant that serves a variety of food that caters to tourists and Memphians alike,” Benny Lendermon with the Riverfront Development Corporation said.

In other words, pretty much what every other restaurant in downtown Memphis is going for.

Especially on weeks like Elvis Week.

There were quite a few people checking out Beale Street Landing, including a group of students from China.

Thank heavens they weren't hungry.

But everybody had something to say about the building.

“I think it's amazing. I think it's gorgeous. It's sort of an abstract way of augmenting the river,” tourist Judy Wombwell said.

At this point you had to wonder if she was looking at the building with the grass on the roof.

The concrete roller coaster with the box on top.

Apparently she was.

“ I like the building because it's in contrast to the riverboats. It's sort of old world versus new world,” tourist Steven Wicks said.

All anybody had to do to see the same thing these folks saw was cross four lanes of traffic, walk along the side of the road, because the sidewalks haven't been installed.

Critics say getting to the place is so hard it'll kill any restaurant.

Benny lendermon says people show up to ride the riverboats...and they will show up to look at the big park scheduled to open next year.

“When you get this world class play area opened, you're going to bring people down here,” Lendermon said.
