MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Calm and orderly. That's how a Frayser daycare owner describes the center's safe exit after a fire broke out Thursday morning.
The Memphis Fire Department was called to Nanna's Leaning Center on the 2500-block of James Road around 8:15 a.m. The daycare owner said everyone was eating breakfast when the fire alarm went off; the 13 children and two adults immediately lined up and left the building. As the owner was walking out she saw smoke coming from the second floor.
Parents were notified of the fire and picked up their children. There were no injuries. The owner says the daycare conducts regular fire drills with the kids, ages 1-4, at least once every month.
According to MFD Lt. Wayne Cooke, that's what saved their lives.
"They routinely practice fire drills, the children never became alarmed. They were able to escape this structure without harm," said Lt. Cooke. "We applaud the attendants, we applaud the administrators of this facility."
Shortly after the blaze, a Department of Human Services employee came to evaluate the facility. The daycare routinely receives high marks from DHS and has a three star rating, the highest possible.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
