MEMPHIS, TN - An impressive and moving tribute to slain Memphis Police Officer Timothy Warren, as hundreds of law enforcement officers formed a "sea of blue" Thursday, July 7th, 2011.
More than 500 police cars, some from as far away as Georgia and Texas, traveled through Downtown Memphis, their blue lights flashing in honor of Officer Warren's service and sacrifice.
Warren was shot and killed Sunday, July 3rd, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Downtown Memphis after responding to a domestic dispute. The accused killer, Alex Haydel, is also charged with the murder of a civilian, Arthur Warren, the ex-husband of Haydel's wife.
Near the corner of Union Avenue and South Third Street in downtown Memphis, the sidewalk was packed with people watching the moving display. Some placed their right hands across their hearts as the procession drove by.
A City of Memphis fire truck hung an American flag over the intersection.
The entire procession lasted about 40 minutes. One spectator told abc24.com she counted 548 police cars in the procession.
