Several Injured by Falling Limbs at Overton Park

At least six people, including three children, were rushed to Memphis hospitals on Labor Day afternoon after two large tree limbs fell on a church barbecue in Overton Park.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - At least six people, including three children, were rushed to Memphis hospitals on Labor Day afternoon after two large tree limbs fell on a church barbecue in Overton Park.

Darion Polk described the sound of the tree limbs cracking "like a big old bomb explosion."

"Just so ugly man, luckily nobody died, you know, because that was some big ole branches," he added.

Sharon Dickerson said a group of around 30 people had gathered for a family and church barbecue when the limbs fell just after 4 p.m.

"I found one baby unconscious under the tree," Dickerson said. "We just started running looking for all the children, because it was like 12 or 13 little babies, we were just trying to count everybody."

The limbs fell from a tree marked with a black spray-painted X.

Tina Sullivan, Executive Director of the Overton Park Conservancy, said the City of Memphis is responsible for the trees as part of a management agreement. She said the Park doesn't mark trees and she didn't believe the city did either.

No one from the city could be reached for comment.

"I said Lord thank you, because it could have been worse then what it was," said Dickerson.

One person was taken from the scene in critical condition, but by Monday night all patients were in non-critical condition.
