Shelby County Teacher Named West TN Teacher Of The Year

Melissa Collins, Ph.D., a second grade teacher at John P. Freeman Optional School, has been named 2014 West Tennessee Grand Division Teacher of the Year by the Tennessee Department of Education.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Melissa Collins, Ph.D., a second grade teacher at John P. Freeman Optional School, has been named 2014 West Tennessee Grand Division Teacher of the Year by the Tennessee Department of Education.

The state’s Teacher of the Year awards recognize teachers for their devotion to students and classroom gains in achievement. Collins was one of nine “Teacher of the Year” finalists recognized by the TN Department of Education during a banquet held Thursday, October 3, in Nashville.

Collins is a Nationally Board Certified teacher and has served as an educator for 12 years. She is the recipient of several awards and honors, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the National Science Teaching Association Sylvia Shugrue Award and most recently, the 2013 Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence.
