MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is warning citizens of a jury duty scam that robs victims of their identity.

Investigators say victims receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a jury duty coordinator, and threaten prosecution for ignoring a jury summons. When the victim protests, the caller asks for their Social Security number and date of birth to verify the information and cancel the supposed arrest warrant.

The fraud has been reported in 11 states, according to the FBI. Authorities add you should never give out personal information when you receive an unsolicited phone call.
