MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - A killer took her husband's life, she was left for dead.

Six years, a heart transplant and a mountain of medical bills later, community members are rallying to help her.

“I was just devastated. It left me with a damage leg, I couldn't walk, I had to crawl and I didn't even know how bad I was hurt or bleeding and I just dialed 911,” heart transplant recipient Barbara Wooten said.

Wooten remembers the day Dexter Cox shot her and her husband in 2007.

Her husband was killed.

Barbara spent years in a wheelchair, fighting infections.

She underwent a successful heart transplant last year.

The only heartache now is her medical bills, totaling thousands of dollars.

Barbara's son is organizing a car wash this weekend to raise money in her honor

“If it wasn't for him I couldn't do it because he's my life, my joy , plus my grand kids , that's what keeps me going is them,” Wooten said. “Every penny counts and I appreciate every penny of it”

The car wash will be held this Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm at Advanced Auto Parts in Millington..

Donations can also be made online to the National Foundation for Transplants.
