South Memphis Welcomes New Farmers Market

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - There are neighborhoods in Memphis where people have to take a bus for two miles, then transfer to another bus just to get a fresh tomato.

In many areas of this city people have to travel a long way to find a grocery store that carries produce. It's a problem that can literally destroy a person's health.

A big step toward fixing that is coming to south Memphis.

A lot of people may have trouble understanding how people who live in a big city have trouble finding fresh vegetables. It is a cold fact of life that big modern supermarkets open in neighborhoods where people have money.

They've got pride and they've got compassion over in south Memphis, but they don't have a supermarket.

"The closest place is probably way down Third Street," said south Memphis resident Gene Kyles.

He's talking about a supermarket about two and a half miles away. If you've got a car, it's a quick trip. If you've got a car.

"The majority of the people in this neighborhood don't drive. So they take the bus. So that's a 45 minute bus ride with a transfer."

The fresh fruit and veggies are just a start. There will be a farmers market at Mississippi and South Parkway soon. The market will also provide cooking demonstrations to help folks eat healthy. It hasn't been easy to eat healthy in many Memphis neighborhoods for a long time.

"There are corner stores that serve the neighborhood for many years but they don't sell produce. That's not their specialty," said South Memphis Farmers Market organizer Roshun Austin. "So we have people with preventative diseases like diabetes and hypertension."

So maybe now you know why the simple things in life are so important for so many in Memphis.

This operation will be open six days a week and for many it's a dream come true.
