DESOTO COUNTY, MS (abc24.com) - A DeSoto County motorcyclist is the victim of a hit and run. He's got a broken pelvis, sternum and wrist, head trauma, internal bleeding and a fractured skull. Police need help catching the man who hit him, but don't know if they'll ever find who's responsible.
30-year-old Chad Weaver was riding his bike to work around 6 o'clock last Friday morning when a car cut in front of him on Goodman Road's I-55 overpass.
"He t-boned the car and he took the full impact of it," says Debbie Brock, Weaver's mother. "It did not throw him. He held onto the bike."
The driver is a Hispanic male in his late 20's, who goes by Wilfredison Ramos Veles. Veles jumped out of the car and ran off, leaving Weaver injured in the middle of the road.
"There's no doubt in my mind this man knew my son was lying on the ground and he was seriously hurt," says Brock. "How you can get up and run away and just leave somebody laying there like that?"
Weaver's pelvis is broken in the front and back. He has a compound fracture in one arm, as well as a fractured skull, internal bleeding and many more injuries.
"Very amazing that he is even still alive," says Brock.
His mom says he's struggling with memory loss too.
"He thinks he just got to the hospital today and he's going to get up and walk out of there today and the doctor's are going to release him," she tells abc24.com.
But Weaver won't be able to walk for at least three months.
Cops believe Veles is an illegal immigrant.
"We think he's using a fake name and social security number just to work," says Southaven Lt. Mark Little.
And now they think he's gone back to Mexico and may never pay for his crime.
"Maybe somebody can identify him or know his real name," says Little. "Or if he's still in the area, which we don't think he is, but if he is maybe someone will recognize him.
Doctors say Weaver has a year and a half recovery ahead of him. He doesn't have any health insurance, since he just started a new job and was a month away from being eligible.
If the man who hit him is ever caught, he faces felony charges.
