Southaven's Top Two Republicans in Runoff for Mayor's Race

Southaven's Republican candidate for mayor will either be a police officer or a local insurance agent.
SOUTHAVEN, MS (abc24.com) - Voters still have to decide who will be their Republican candidate for mayor this year.

The top two politicians from Tuesday's primary will face each other in a run off election in two weeks.

Southaven's Republican candidate for mayor will be either a police officer or a local insurance agent.

"I was fortunate to be the leader in overall votes. I was amazed and surprised by that and very grateful," says Darren Musselwhite. It's his first time running for political office.

"I've been in the insurance business for 21 years here in Southaven. I never had political aspirations, but like a lot of people here in Southaven, I realized it was time to step up and help my hometown."

Even though Musselwhite had the most votes in the primary, it wasn't enough. He'll face Jerald Wheeler in a runoff to grab the GOP nomination.

"I'm a 28 year veteran of the Southaven Police Department," Wheeler says. "I want Southaven to be the same Southaven it was when I grew up."

Neither candidate would come out and say it, but both hinted at recent scandals inside city hall as the reason they decided to run. Both say it's time to restore Southaven's reputation.

"Southaven's image has been tarnished," Wheeler says. "We're going to work to restore that and restore accountability at city hall and make it accessible at city hall. All the public records should be on the internet and we should hold everyone accountable."

"Everybody talks about transparency," adds Musselwhite. "You give true transparency to people and let them know everything that's going on so they can trust their leaders again."

The runoff election is May 21st.
