Southwest Airlines Opens Flights From Memphis

How does a $153 round-trip ticket from Memphis to Florida sound? Southwest Airlines is now booking tickets out of Memphis, with service set to start in early November.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Sick of all this rain in the Mid-South? How does a $153 round-trip ticket from Memphis to Florida sound? Southwest Airlines is now booking tickets out of Memphis, with service set to start in early-November.

"I wish that would have happened sooner to be honest, because we fly down here so much and it is really frustrating how much we have spent," said Katelyn Helgeson as she prepared to fly home to Minneapolis.

On Monday, travelers could book non-stop flights from Memphis to Baltimore, Chicago, Houston, Orlando and Tampa. Flights were as low as $153 roundtrip.

Flights could be booked starting November 3rd.

"I am excited to have them in the neighborhood," said Josh McCarty. "I think it is good, more competition, I look forward to seeing them here."

Benjamin Jackson and Ronnisha Norris were at Memphis International Airport on Monday evening preparing for a flight to Baltimore.

They said they paid around $700 for their two tickets.

"We know where we are going next, Southwest," said Jackson.

"Our flight schedules are in the process of loading on southwest.com and AirTran.com. We're looking forward to announcing soon many new options for Customers flying between both our Southwest and AirTran destinations," Chris Mainz, a spokesman with Southwest said Monday.

"We've said we would offer Southwest service in all AirTran-only domestic cities (including Memphis!) by the end of this year and our Flight Schedule extension announcement tomorrow morning should not disappoint," he added.

The airline released its full schedule at 10 a.m. Tuesday at southwest.com.
