Southwest Now Offering Low Fares at Memphis International

The long drives to Little Rock or Nashville to get cheaper airfares could be over for Memphis travelers.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The long drives to Little Rock or Nashville to get cheaper airfares could be over for Memphis travelers.

Low fare carrier Southwest Airlines will officially begin flying from Memphis in the fall of 2013.

Currently Delta dominates ticket row at Memphis International, but it will soon be joined by Southwest. When airport president Larry Cox got the word, he was ecstatic.

“It’s incredible news,” Cox told abc24.com, “it’s something we’ve been wanting for 25 years.”

Starting Tuesday, May 7, five non-stop flights from Memphis were listed on the Southwest Airlines website; you can book now for November.

“This is just the beginning of our long term commitment and presence in the Memphis market,” said Southwest Airlines spokesperson Chris Mainz.

Even though it had been officially announced, after such a long wait, Memphis flyers remained skeptical.

“Well we hope it’s still coming,” said airline passenger Jeanna Nicosia, “I mean, I’ll wait and see for real.”

One new flight travels to Chicago where one of Jeanna’s kids lives, so this news is especially welcome. Right now, “It takes all day to get anywhere we go,” she said.

Cox feels Southwest’s presence could attract other low fare carriers and plenty of customers.

“With lower fares you get people not only from your own community to patronize your airport, but also people in the region.”

Southwest promises more than just low prices.

“We have low fares, great customer service and a very convenient flight schedule,” Mainz told abc24.com, “everything that comes with the brand we’ll be bringing to Memphis in November.”

That is welcome news not only for Memphis airline passengers, but for the guy who runs the airport.

“Amen!” said Cox laughing.

In just a few months the departure board at Memphis International will feature five new, non-stop flights from Memphis to Baltimore, Orlando, Houston, Tampa Bay and Chicago.
