Still No Progress on Blighted Memphis Hotel

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The condition of an abandoned hotel near Memphis International Airport has neighbors outraged.

The Executive Inn at Airways and Brooks is not a pretty sight. Walls are missing and vandals have had their way with it. Neighbors say enough is enough.

It's safe to say an executive hasn't stayed at the Executive Inn in a long time. But looking at the graffiti, someone has been there.

Brandon Edwards had to snap a picture of the spray painted walls inside Executive Inn.

"I was going to put it on my Instagram page… it used to be a pretty hotel back in the day," he said. "It's kind of an eyesore now."

For more than a year, the City of Memphis has been trying to get the building torn down. The city has taken the owner to Enviromental Court several times but so far, no resolution.

"It's frustrating and I know it's frustrating to people of the community. They want something representative of the community they live in, and that property doesn't represent Memphis and the airport area," said Memphis City Councilman Harold Collins.

Collis says each time they go to court the case gets delayed.

"I wish we had a stronger judicial system that would force these out-of-state property owners to do what they're supposed to do."

Last year the court ordered the owner to clean up the property and fence it off. He did, but Collins says that's not enough.

"He's using every avenue he can to not fix it up until we get a court order for him to do something in a specified amount of time."

Shelby County Environmental Court Judge Potter stated someone wants to buy the property and renovate it, but so far the potential owner and current owner can't agree on a price.

If they can't get a deal done, all parties will be back in court soon.
