Storm Shelters Should be Registered for Emergency Crews

MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The Director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness is asking that residents register their storm shelters so emergency crews know where to look if homes collapse.

A shelter's the safest place to be in a storm and now they're easier than ever to install, but buyers still need to make sure the County knows they're there.

When Stacy Royalty first moved to her Collierville home, a storm shelter was her top priority. "We have the 10 to 12 man shelter so we feel safe with it," she says. She and her family moved out a couple months ago, and it was again the first order of business in their new home. "We were in a tornado situation in middle Tennessee," she explains, "It hit about a mile from our house. And you know that could be you, it's just scary."

That feeling has created a bustling business for Pam Arbeiter and her business partner with TSW Storm Shelters in Collierville. Their underground shelters range from $5,400 to $6,200 and they take half a day to install. "You need to be underground to survive these tornadoes and people are realizing that," Arbeiter says.

If you are underground, Shelby County wants to make sure the shelter owner registers the address and location of the shelter with the Office of Preparedness, so they know exactly where to look in case debris is collapsed on top. Owners can do so by visiting their website at www.staysafeshelby.us or by calling (901) 222-6700.

For Royalty, it's all about peace of mind. "I was watching the Weather Channel and they showed the devastation in Oklahoma and when they were talking I heard someone yell, 'Look at the tornado shelter,' and when the weatherman walked over the house was completely destroyed - the only thing left was the tornado shelter, everyone walked away."
