Study: Cigarette Tax Helping Users Kick Two Habits

Killing two bad habits with one stone. Researchers say cigarette tax hikes are doing just that.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Killing two bad habits with one stone.

Researchers say cigarette tax hikes are doing just that.

We know increasing cig taxes makes smokers light up less.

Now, Stanford researchers say smoking taxes may affect heavy drinkers, too.

They studied more than 20,000 people.

They found heavy drinkers living in states where cigarette taxes had already gone into effect cut their alcohol intake by 10 percent.

Their binge drinking went down by 22 percent.

While we know there are strong links between smoking and heavy drinking, this study shows the solutions to the issues may be connected as well.
