Study: Mid-South Finds Romance at Walmart

MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Are you looking for that special someone? Apparently Cupid shops at Walmart, especially in the Mid-South.

Finding love is tough under the best of circumstances, so maybe you’ve been looking in the wrong place. Because now, according to Psychology Today, at Walmart you can get discounts on groceries, clothes and lovers.

As the old song goes, “I was lookin’ for love in all the wrong places.”

Now, Psychology Today is removing the guess work, publishing a map that shows the most popular hook-up spots in all 50 states.

In Arizona, it’s L.A. Fitness. In New York it’s the subway; the one you ride in, not the sandwich place.

And in the Mid-South, the most popular hook-up destination is Walmart.

“I guess the term redneck mall is right,” Luke McLaurine told abc24.com.

The magazine cites the Missed Connections section of Craigslist as proof Walmart is the place to be.

One ad on Craigslist was for “the beautiful redhead at Walmart on Germantown Parkway”; it read, in part: "I saw you waiting in line to check out, you looked stunning. Please email me.”

“I wouldn’t think Walmart would be a place you would be looking for love,” noted Lakeland resident Holly Meadors.

“I don’t really look around to find somebody to love on,” said McLaurine, “not at Walmart.”

"I just don’t see it,” said Meadors, “I don’t see the attraction to Walmart.”

As opposed, or course, to the traditional place Holly met her husband.

“A bar,” said a laughing Meadors.

One response to Psychology Today read: Walmart—a leading love indicator; how sad.

“That is sad,” said McLaurine, “I would think so. Low prices, low women.”

Other interesting facts from Psychology Today: if you are in your 20's you’re probably looking for love at an ice cream shop; 30's, a bar; 40 and up, a strip club.
