MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - A number of shootings in Memphis last year happened near community centers, so this year the centers are a big part of the city's 'Gun Down' Safe Summer Initiative.

"Well, what were attempting to do is reduce gun violence and reduce crime. We want the neighborhood to come together and want our neighbors to begin to know one another," said DeAndre Brown.

Hundreds of kids gathered to attend the Summer Night Lights party in Frayser. This program is part of the Memphis Gun Down Safe Summer initiative to help kick youth violence. This free event includes swimming, basketball, games, and inflatables for kids to jump on.

"I got in the jungle gym. I saw a lot of people that can sing and dance and I also did the zumba classes," said Jayla Kimbro.

"I like swimming and playing outside," said Shannon Small.

According to DeAundre Brown, the organizer of Friday night's event, the last census listed Frayser as a high crime area for kids. Summer Night Lights is geared to bring kids together and teach them how to get along without violence.

Diane Williams, mother of two, says it's something the community needs.

"I think it's a good thing because they can have something positive to do. You know they won't have to be around outside doing nothing and getting in trouble."
