MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis police have released surveillance video of a drive-by shooting that left one man dead, and led to the cancellation of the Bluff City Classic.

The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 5 on the 800-block of Walker Avenue near LeMoyne-Owen College. Officers say 29-year-old Fredrick Poplar was shot by an unknown suspect inside a white SUV. Poplar was transported to The MED in extremely critical condition but died a short time later.

The video shows the suspect's vehicle in the upper-left corner drive up alongside the victim walking on the sidewalk, fire at the victim, then drive away, making a right-hand turn in front of the camera.

The Bluff City Classic basketball tournament was being held in the LeMoyne-Owen gymnasium at the time of the shooting, although investigators have said they do not believe the shooting was related to the event.

After players and family members voiced safety concerns, organizers of the Bluff City Classic cancelled the event. A scheduled 15 games were cancelled. The Bluff City Classic would have run until August 9th.
