MEMPHIS, TN - Alexander Haydel is charged with two counts of first degree murder, one for killing Memphis Police officer Timothy Warren, the other for murdering Arthur Warren, the ex-husband of Haydel's wife. Haydel was formally charged with both shootings Tuesday, July 5. Police say Haydel used military tactics against them, his goal was to kill as many officers as he could.

Officer Warren was certified by Homeland Security's domestic violence training program. But when he found Haydel in the stairwell of the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Memphis, Police say Haydel had already killed and was ready to kill again.

Haydel told police he set two fire extinguishers by officer Warren's body. He planned to shoot them from above and told investigators he hoped the explosion would, "kill everyone in the blast radius." Police were able to stop him, but not before he murdered his wife's ex-husband, Arthur Warren and police officer Timothy Warren.

Mark Matlick donated money to the officer's family at Sky Grille downtown on Tuesday. He said, "You lose a member of the community it hits hard, and especially the way officer Warren served the community not just as an officer but as a Christian." But that was all cut short, police say, by Haydel man.

Police are releasing new details about what happened Sunday night, July 3, 2011. Haydel, his wife, Bobbie Warren, and her ex-husband, Arthur Warren got into a fight on Beale Street. When they went back to the DoubleTree hotel Haydel went to his car and brought two guns to the ninth floor where he shot and killed Arthur Warren.

Officers responded. Timothy Warren wasn't on duty yet, but friends say he always wanted to help, that's why he ran up the stairwell of the DoubleTree hotel. Police say, between the 8th and 9th floors, in the stairwell, the officer was shot and killed by Haydel.

Haydel took the officers guns and two full magazines. Then court records say Haydel plotted to kill the other officers who would come up the stairs. Haydel told police he went up the stairwell to gain a tactical advantage on responding officers. His plan was to shoot the fire extinguishers and hope the blast would kill everyone responding.

Eventually police say he gave up. But he had already left a path of destruction behind him.

The DoubleTree Hotel's General Manager says they are operating with "emergency procedures," he wouldn't comment beyond that.

Officer Warren's wife, Betsy, met with the police department Tuesday, July 5, to begin working on funeral arrangements. Officer Warren was 39-years-old, he leaves behind his wife and two children, James and Jewel.

Haydel will be arraigned Wednesday, July 6.
