Suspect Wanted for Attempted Kidnapping of Elderly Woman

An east Memphis great-grandmother says she's lucky to be alive after she was nearly kidnapped Tuesday afternoon.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - An east Memphis great-grandmother says she's lucky to be alive after she was nearly kidnapped Tuesday afternoon.

"He said I have a gun, get in your car," said the woman, who didn't want to be identified with the suspect still on the loose.

"I went ahhh, I screamed and I ducked down and ran between the cars because I figured if he is going to shoot me, he is going to have trouble if I am going in and out of cars," she added.

Officers were called to the Mendenhall Commons at S. Mendenhall Rd and Sanderlin Ave just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14. Investigators say the 74-year-old woman was loading items into her car when she was approached by an older white male asking for a ride to Nashville.

"It took a second for it all to play out, you think you would just know it was happening," said Amy Goode, who witnessed the entire thing as she sat in her car.

"The next thing I see is she ducks and runs in front of her car," she said. "He is going towards her, and he looks up and sees me and eyes get wide and he takes off running."

During the commotion, a witness saw the suspect running from the scene and followed him to Poplar Ave and Colonial Rd. The witness was able to take a cell phone picture of the suspect and provide it to police.

"She said he would have had to kill me in the parking lot, I would not have gotten in that car," Goode recounted.

The suspect is described as a white male around 48-52 years old, 5'7"-5'9", average build, with a receding hairline. He was last seen wearing an orange and white striped shirt and blue jeans.

"I am so lucky, I really am I am so lucky and I just hope they find him before he does something to somebody," the woman said.
