The man suspected of trying to kidnap an elderly woman in east Memphis has turned himself in to police.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The man suspected of trying to kidnap an elderly woman in east Memphis has turned himself in to police.

Officers were called to the Mendenhall Commons at S. Mendenhall Rd and Sanderlin Ave just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14. Investigators say the 74-year-old woman was loading items into her car when she was approached by an older white male asking for a ride to Nashville.

"He said I have a gun, get in your car," said the woman, who didn't want to be identified.

"The next thing I see is she ducks and runs in front of her car," said Amy Goode, who witnessed the entire thing as she sat in her car. "He is going towards her, and he looks up and sees me and eyes get wide and he takes off running."

During the commotion, a witness saw the suspect running from the scene and followed him to Poplar Ave and Colonial Rd. The witness was able to take a cell phone picture of the suspect and provide it to police. That picture was released to the media, and quickly circulated on Facebook and Twitter.

According to an MPD spokesperson, the suspect turned himself in Wednesday but has not yet been formally charged.
