THP Operating "No Refusal" campaign for Labor Day Travellers

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - It's Labor Day, and that means law enforcement will be out in force throughout the Mid-South, trying to keep the roads safe.

In Tennessee, state troopers will be operating a "No Refusal" campaign

“We're coming from Connecticut and so far the ride has been really atrocious," traveler Michael Nieliwocki said.

Nieliwocki's holiday weekend includes a long road trip to San Antonio, Texas.

He's witnessed first hand, highway driving can be dangerous.

"We've come across three tractor trailer accidents, looks like there have been fatals. We've been sitting on the highway for three hours. It's going to be a rough ride," Nieliwocki said.

He says the roads felt safer, once he crossed the Tennessee state line.

He credits state troopers.

“I've already seen them doing their job and I think it's awesome. Seems like everybody is obeying the road in Tennessee. It's been everything North of TN that I really run into the encounter," Nieliwocki said.

Sergeant Chris Richardson with the Tennessee Highway Patrol says it's all hands on deck, during this big holiday weekend.

“All of our admin people that are normally in the office, they're all out this weekend," Richardson said.

With the state saturated with extra troopers, get ready. There will be checkpoints.

“Yeah, there are sobriety checkpoints and drivers license checkpoints all over the district," Richardson said.

Memphian Stephanie Matthews offers up advice for drivers during this holiday.

“I would say you have to not only control yourself but watch other people because you never know what somebody else may do," Matthews said.
