Teen's Death Prompts Push for Light at Horn Lake Intersection

HORN LAKE, MS (abc24.com) - Work is underway to make a dangerous and deadly DeSoto County intersection safer.

It's right off Goodman Road in Horn Lake. A 16-year-old Horn Lake High School student died after a car wreck there last week. Now county supervisors are vowing to make sure another tragedy doesn't happen.

The intersection is at Dunbarton and Goodman Road. There is a stop sign on Dunbarton, but many say it's not enough.

"I think it's insane," says driver Jeff Lizak. He hates turning off Dunbarton onto Goodman's four lanes of traffic.

"Sometimes you can look and before you know it someone's coming over that hill," says Wendolyn Young.

"A stoplight is needed," Lizak says.

Some say it's overdue.

Flowers, balloons and teddy bears mark the spot where 16-year-old Nikki Yeager was fatally injured in an accident last Tuesday night.

The teen was a leader in Horn Lake High School's ROTC program. She talked with ABC 24 News last fall about how much she loved ROTC.

"It's all about overcoming your fears and knowing you can do it," she said last September. "Motivating yourself and people around you."

Her death has spurred DeSoto County's supervisors into action. They're talking with MDOT and the Memphis Metropolitan Planning Organization about installing a traffic light at the intersection.

"My daughter is getting ready to drive soon and that right there, that scares me," Young says. "She's at the high school and she wants to drive and get a job this summer. I'm like, I'll drop you off."

"They need a light. Clear, plain and simple," Lizak says.

"We don't want anything like this to happen," Young adds.

The county submitted its application for a traffic light last week. If it's not approved, supervisors say they'll take other steps to make the spot safer.
