Thieves Stealing Wheels Off Cordova Cars

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Memphis police are telling drivers to be wary. Several people in Cordova have had to get new tires after the wheels were stolen right off their cars.

"It was one of those things where I had to keep looking. And asking did it happen? It did happen," says Paul Figg. "I just hope this can make people more aware."

Figg's Mitsubishi Galant is the latest car to have its wheels ripped off - tires, rims, and all - stolen sometime in the middle of the night. He got up for work Thursday and they were gone.

"Wake up and you've got no tires," he tells Local 24 News. His car was parked at the Country Squire Apartments.

"The car was just propped up with some old block and battery from some other car." Figg says the tires were nothing fancy. "They were just from the factory. Factory issued ones."

When he reported the crime to Memphis police, he found out tires are being stolen at apartment complexes across Cordova.

"They said that I'm one of many reports."

"Wow," says William Lambert. "That's news for me, working in this neighborhood. Thank goodness I still have my wheels."

Several thefts happened at apartments in Country Squire. Police have stepped up patrols, but Figg was still hit.

"Obviously the thieves know what they're doing. They have the equipment to do it," says Figg.

"Tires are worth money," Lambert says. "Some wheels are probably worth $200 a piece. So for a thief, you know, that's easy pickings, especially in the middle of the night."

Officers told Figg at least three other people living in Country Squires were victims.

They told us there has been a rash of tire thefts, but did not say how exactly many.
