MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Tow truck operators say the Memphis City Council is putting them in danger with a tough new amendment to the city's current towing ordinance.

Operators say they're most angry about the portion of the law requiring Memphis Police to clear the vehicle before it can be towed.

Operators say that can take over two hours, leaving them as sitting ducks in what is often a dangerous environment.

"Somebody is going to get hurt," says Heather Guess with Superior Automotive and Towing. "Until this is amended, someone is going to end up hurt before this is all said and done with, I promise you that."

Guess and several other tow truck operators spoke out at the council's meeting on Tuesday, November 1, 2011.

The council passed the ordinance, which toughens oversight and existing laws governing the city's tow truck operators.

"It says they don't care about our safety, is what it tells me," says Guess.  "I mean, I'll be honest, the city doesn't care about our safety."

The city council says it will consider giving the tow truck operators a time window to move the car before it is cleared by MPD, when it meets again in two weeks.

If you are not paying the note then it ain't your vehicle! If you don't pay your rent you can't live there. Everything is about money - even if you don't get a paycheck then you get welfare because someone works to pay the money to the government. My car has never been towed for a delinquent ticket - and yes, I have gotten tickets but I pay them. Pay for your car and park where you should - no one will tow it!

Pay your bills, and don't park where you shouldn't. If you can't pay your note and know it, let it go. These people are doing a job for the bank, or city, and just trying to earn a living. It's past time people take responsibility for their actions. I know that is unheard of in this democrap society, but libs live in a fantasy land. Nothing in life is free. Here in the real world the working people pay for the government handouts and can't afford any more taxes or a bigger government. In the real world if you don't pay your bills the electric co. will turn you off. The landlord will kick you out. And the bank will take your car. @wehillusa, I hope you aren't as ignorant as your post suggests. You agree to buy a car, then stop making payments, and when the bank comes to get THEIR property, it's the tow drivers fault? That kind of thinking is why we got obummer in the white house, and why our nation is going bankrupt. Put down your crack pipe, turn off cnn, and rejoin reality. You think your car is worth more than a persons life, and it's not even your car, it's the bank's. Pathetic. God will have a field day with you.

Well if tow truck drivers are towing because of tickets of repo they should be scared. They are causing a major inconvenience to the vehicle owners just for money. They say we are not thinking about their safety well they are not thinking about the inconvenience they are causing the vehicle owners so they need a butt whoppin!! You want the money then take the risk!!
