Trumann Police Release Video of Deadly Officer Shooting

A year and a half after officer Jonathan Schmidt was shot and killed, the Trumann Police Department released video of the deadly traffic stop.
TRUMANN, AR (abc24.com) - The father of Trumann Police Officer Jonathan Schmidt, killed in the line of duty last year, calls his son's murderer an animal.

"Our bright spot was taken out of our lives," Donald Schmidt told abc24.com. "To lose a child is to lose a piece of yourself."

A year and a half after Schmidt was shot and killed the Trumann Police Department released video of the deadly traffic stop. Schmidt can be seen stopping a car that held three people. Schmidt placed the driver under arrest because of an outstanding warrant. After walking to the back seat door where Jerry Lard was sitting, Schmidt opened Lard's door. That's when Lard shot him in the face. Jerry Lard is then seen continuing to fire at Schmidt and Sgt. Corey Overstreet.

Overstreet was not hit but Schmidt eventually died.

Jerry Lard was given the death penalty for Schmidt's murder and life in prison for shooting at Overstreet.
