Tunica County may lose its rank as having the highest unemployment rate in Mississippi thanks to a new project announced Tuesday.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Tunica County may lose its rank as having the highest unemployment rate in Mississippi thanks to a new project announced Tuesday.

It's nothing but a corn field now, however this time next year expect to see construction on a new facility that will give jobs to at least 300 people & possibly help take Tunica off the map when it comes to unemployment.

"Thank you for having confidence in the state of Mississippi and in Tunica County. I can assure you one thing, we will not let you down," Mississippi governor Phil Bryant said.

Bryant said that during Tuesday’s groundbreaking ceremony for a new manufacturing plant to be built in tunica.

Germany based Feurer Powertrain, the company that manufacturers crankshafts for the automotive & transportation industry.

"It is our intention to become a useful part of this area and of this community with satisfied customers, high investments, motivated employees, and with good tax earnings for the government," Dieter Feuter of Feurer Powertrain said.

"See this company, this great Feuer Powertrain will help do something very special. They will change the lives of Mississippians," Bryant said.

The Tunica project will create at least 300 new jobs with starting salaries around $40,000 a year.

"Now we have become an international destination for manufacturing here in Mississippi. There is no limit to what we can do," Bryant said.

This will be the plants first trip overseas to set up shop since it began operating in 2003.

Feurer visited several other states & at least 6 other communities in Mississippi.

Why Tunica? Let’s just say a little southern hospitality goes a long way.

"There is no better workforce in the world better than the men and women of our beloved Mississippi," Bryant said.

Also announced Tuesday, Nissan will be introducing an optional diesel engine in its titan pick up truck with the crankshaft built by Feuer Powertrain.

Construction will begin in late 2014.
