Two Charged with Midtown Carjacking

Two carjacking suspects are recovering at the hospital after they crashed the stolen car during a police chase Sunday night.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Two carjacking suspects are recovering at the hospital after they crashed the stolen car during a police chase Sunday night.

Memphis police responded to a carjacking at the Jet-O-Matic Car Wash on North Avalon St around 9:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 28. Investigators say the victim was washing his car when he was hit in the back of the head with a gun. Two suspects robbed him of his wallet and keys and took off in the victim's green 2004 GMC Envoy.

Officer later spotted the stolen vehicle that same evening at the Mapco at S Danny Thomas Blvd and Linden Ave. As police tried to stop the vehicle, the suspects took off and a brief chase ensued; the suspects then crashed into the Kraus Model Laundry Cleaners a few blocks away.

Both suspects, 44-year-old Derrick Perkins and 42-year-old Jerald Dawson, were ejected from the SUV and transported to The MED in critical condition, but have since been upgraded to non-critical.

Perkins and Dawson are both charged with Carjacking and Evading Arrest. Their first court appearances are pending their release from the hospital.
