Two Men Engage in Shootout at Southaven Apartments

One man is in the hospital and another is in jail after they fired nearly a dozen times at each other in the middle of a Southaven apartment complex Sunday night.
SOUTHAVEN, MS (abc24.com) - One man is in the hospital and another is in jail after they fired nearly a dozen times at each other in the middle of a Southaven apartment complex Sunday night.

According to Lieutenant Mark Little with the Southaven Police Department, "We have a little bit of trouble there on that side of town."

That trouble is particularly at the South Park Gardens Apartments right off Highway 51. The latest problem for police was a shooting on Sunday, June 3 between Terry Harris and Kenneth Sandifer.

Lt. Little says the two were arguing when both left and later returned with guns. The men shot at each other at least eight or ten times. Harris was hit in his chest and taken to The MED; Sandifer was arrested.

It happens often, Little says. Officers make frequent stops at the complex.

"Calls of shots fired, some shootings, burglaries, things like that; it's an area we work around a lot," Little said. "We have a lot of people hanging out that don't live there."

So much so, the apartments have created a list of people who are banned. Harris is on it and never should have been there Sunday night.

On night patrols officers are often buddied up for that very reason.

"When our officers go in the ones that aren't supposed to be there will usually take off, try to avoid officers. We go there with more than just one to round them up."

Both Harris and Sandifer are charged with aggravated assault. Sandifer is being held in the DeSoto County Jail on a $10,000 bond. Harris was released from the hospital and disappeared before he could be arrested. Police have a warrant out for his arrest.
