Unified School Board Passes $1.18B Budget

The Unified School Board passed a $1.18 billion budget Thursday afternoon, with a slightly smaller shortfall than expected.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The Unified School Board passed a $1.18 billion budget Thursday afternoon, with a slightly smaller shortfall than expected.

After securing an additional $4 million from the state, the current budget proposal is still $30 million in the red.

However, according to Interim Superintendent Dorsey Hopson, that gap could be closed if Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell's additional property tax increase is approved.

Mayor Luttrell submitted a revised county budget Wednesday that added another six cents to the prior 30 cent increase to the property tax rate.

Luttrell stated that due to a decline in property values, a 30 cent tax increase was necessary just to maintain the same revenue as last year.

With a total 36 cent increase, the county could provide $20 million for the schools.
