MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com)--A Memphis man is in jail for shooting his girlfriend six times in the parking lot at Halle Stadium Thursday night.

The shooting happened shortly after friends and family had gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember a 16-year-old Ridgeway High School student who died last weekend.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says around 10:30 p.m., 24-year-old Monique Smith pulled into the parking lot of Halle Stadium. They say 29-year-old Vernon Walton followed her into the lot, got out of the car and fired several shots into the driver's side window. Investigators say he then walked around to the passenger's side, opened the door and fired more shots at the victim.

Smith was taken to The MED in critical condition. Deputies say she had taken out a restraining order against Walton a week ago.

Walton is currently at the Shelby County Jail without bond and scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.
