DESOTO COUNTY, MS (abc24.com) - 2013 is expected to be a big election season in DeSoto County.

Several cities have hotly contested races for aldermen and mayor. You must register to vote 30 days before an election.

DeSoto County's primary is May 7th. Friday was the last day new voters could register in person, but if you're mailing in your application, you have another day.

It must be postmarked by Saturday, April 6th.

A spokesperson for the circuit clerk's office says only Republican candidates are in the primary. The Democrats running for office are unopposed.

If you are just planning to vote in the general election, you still have another month to register since it doesn't take place until June.

"It's very important to get out and have a voice in your community. You need to know what's going on all the time, that's very, very important," says DeSoto County voter Lenora Brown. "Every time it's available to vote I will be voting."
