WEST MEMPHIS, AR (localmemphis.com) - For the first time in 40 years, the West Memphis City School District has a new superintendent. West Memphis High School Principal Jon Collins has been hired for the job.

His co-workers say Collins is a natural born leader who has a passion for West Memphis schools. When the superintendent search ended, they were happy with the chosen candidate.

"I think Jon has some good ideas for the district," said Jimmy Sloan, West Memphis High School's Dean of Students. "He's just going to stand in and do what he know needs to be done to make West Memphis School District the best district it can be."

Principal Collins will start his new gig in the 2013-2014 school year. He beat out 14 other candidates for the job.

"It didn't surprise me, it was fitting for him. Mr. Collins has always been ambitious from the time I've known him indirectly to the time I've become aquatinted with him directly. Always set goals for himself and accomplished them step by step," said West Memphis High School Attendance Officer Maurice Blair.

Collins is already well known in the West Memphis School District. His career has seen a somewhat of a meteoric rise. From teaching biology, to dean of students, to becoming a principal, the students he leaves behind say his promotion is bittersweet.

Former student Anissia Williams said of Collins, "I'm used to him being a principal. He was a good principal."

Many described Collins as a natural leader who is active in state and professional organizations. This principal led West Memphis High School faculty and staff in improving test scores.

His staff members believe he has the right tools to lead the district.

"Jon did a real good job. We got along well and I think he has a real good interest here for the school. He will probably be a real good superintendent," said Orival Mcclure, West Memphis High School Automotive Instructor.

Current Superintendent Bill Kesinger's last day will be June 30th. Collins will start July 1st.
