MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - As the results of the municipal school referendum votes show, the overwhelming majority in all six Shelby County suburbs want their own school systems. The next step is electing school board members in each community. Then they've got a pile of work ahead before starting their systems next year.

The vote was overwhelmingly in favor of municipal schools in Bartlett. In fact, it was a larger margin of victory than last time a year ago. Now the real work begins.

"In Bartlett there's a Bartlett Education Advisory Committee and they're putting together all the policies and all the budget information and that kind of the info so the [school board] candidates have something to run with," said Mick Wright with Better Bartlett Schools.

For the six municipalities, once school boards are elected the next thing they do will be huge. No choice will be more important than choosing a superintendent of schools.

"First thing on the agenda will be of course hiring a superintendent. We think there will be some good candidates out there for superintendent," Wright said.

The reason is clear - the superintendents will be in charge of school systems starting from the ground up. Superintendents don't get this chance much.

"He's got to put together a full system. The superintendent then has to staff the schools and all that so it's a very narrow time frame we're looking at."

The next year will fly, and everybody knows it. The municipalities want to be operating by August of next year.

"This is a sprint. Everything's got to hit just right, plus the county commission is still out there and what they're going to do we don't know."
