White House to Spotlight 'Memphis Soul'

As part of the Performance at the White House concert series, the spotlight will shine on Memphis as President Obama and the first lady welcome several Bluff City native musicians, such as Al Green, Justin Timberlake, and Booker T. Jones.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - As part of the Performance at the White House concert series, the spotlight will shine on Memphis as President Obama and the first lady welcome several Bluff City native musicians, such as Al Green, Justin Timberlake, and Booker T. Jones.

The event will be streamed live on the White House website starting at 5:55 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, and broadcast on PBS Tuesday, April 16.

Also in the concert line-up are Steve Cropper, Queen Latifah, Mavis Staples, Ben Harper, Cyndi Lauper, and Alabama Shakes, among others.

In addition to the concert, First Lady Michelle Obama is hosting the daytime workshop "Soulsville, USA: The History of Memphis Soul." 120 students will take part, including several from Soulsville Charter School and Stax Music Academy.
