Will Southaven's Outlets Ever Be Built?

It was supposed to open this fall, but there has been one delay after another. Now that new city leaders are taking over, residents wonder if it will cause even more delays.
SOUTHAVEN, MS (localmemphis.com) - Two years after it was announced, Southaven's promised outlet mall is still an empty field.

It was supposed to open this fall, but there has been one delay after another. Now that new city leaders are taking over, residents wonder if it will cause even more delays. Some shoppers question if the mall will even be built.

"I live two blocks up. I've only been here about two years though," says Gina Lassiter.

The field where the Outlet Shops of the Mid-South is supposed to be built hasn't changed at all over the last two years.

"I'd shop there. I love outlet malls," says Antoinette Pritchard.

Southaven shoppers are ready to see action. "I would shop there," says Bonnie Smith.

Mayor Greg Davis says construction hasn't started because the land owner and developer, Poag and McEwen LifeStyle Centers, have details to iron out.

The city's not involved in those talks. Davis points out it took seven years to build the nearby Southaven Town Center.

Southaven's new mayor and board of aldermen are committed to making the outlets a reality.

That's good news for shoppers who right now have to drive to out of town to outlet shop.

"Because there's not many around here. They're coming," says Karen Cole. "It's a good idea. If they move along with it."

With so many details up in the air, there's no telling when construction will start.
