WYNNE, AR (abc24.com) - Tensions flared and cops were called to the school board meeting Wednesday night in Wynne, Arkansas.
It followed a controversial vote on the punishment for two students at the center of race-based hazing allegations.
“What happened to my son shouldn't have happened to anybody's child and something should be did about this,” the victim’s mother said.
Dozens of concerned parents packed into the high school's cafeteria to find out what the school board would do about it.
“I make a motion that the school expel Jeremy Miller for the remainder of the semester,” Stacie Schlenker said amidst jeers from the crowd.
Many parents, including the victim's, wanted the boys expelled for the rest of the year. When that didn't happen, they walked out.
“If it had been a black who did it to a white he would've been arrested,” one of the victim’s relatives said.
Superintendent Carl Easley says he wants the same punishment as many parents, but all he offered to them was this statement.
“The parents of the students have apologized for any heartache I said they apologized for embarrassment to district apologized for any embarrassment and heartache they caused the students,” Easley said.
That apology isn't enough for the victim's mother.
“I refuse to accept this. It's not right and it is racial,” she said.
She wants the students involved to be prosecuted.
